Here, a few of my favorite Britcoms (if nothing else, watch the Bill Bailey bit under Comedians):
Father Ted - Who doesn't love Irish priests? One of the best sitcoms of all time. Available. (irish slang - arse, feck off)
Spaced - someone's posted the entire first episode!!! Ah, the tale of 2 twentysomethings pretending to be in a relationship in order to rent an apartment. Effing brilliant. Written by Simon Pegg/Jessica Hynes/Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), with Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Jessica Hynes. Possibly worksafe, but 25m long.
Garth Marenghi's Dark Place - absolutely brilliant spoof of early 80's horror shows. I mean, internets, it even looks like it was filmed back then. Doesn't Sanch remind you of Dirk Benedict? Was shown briefly on SciFi US last year. Definitely not ws!
The League of Gentlemen - surrealist horror/comedy/drama about a small village in Northern England. Funny, sick, gross, and really, really, really funny. Highly recommended if your sense of humor is, ah, twisted! Originally began as a radio show. Job Club, Papa Lazarou are but a few of the characters along with Tubbs and Edward. NWS!
Comedians:
Bill Bailey - comedian/musician/smart guy/actor. Appears in Spaced, Black Books, and on various music game shows. Chaucer Pubbe Gagge (ws? - Lang) Cockney Music, News Themes, The Scale of Evil, ws.
Sketch shows:
The Fast Show: Ron Manager! Jazz Club - nice! Ted and Ralph! Scorchio! ws
Goodness Gracious Me: Classic scene: Going Out For An English. Comedy skewering new cultures in old countries. Opening bit from Ep 1. And the hilarious Gay Son. ws-ish
Little Britain: Vicky Pollard, Dafydd - the only gay in the village, and Lou and Andy are my favorites. Dafydd interviews Elton John. Vicky is, hilariously, based on far too many British teens. Originally started as a radio show. ws-ish.
ETA: I can't believe I forgot about:
Look Around You - brilliant spoof of children's educational films. From the 70's. totally ws.
And I wrote, about Goodness Gracious Me:
'Comedy skewering new cultures in old countries.'
I meant to say 'comedy skewering attitudes between new cultures and old countries'
Enjoy!
